Sunshine Sue (Mary Arlene Higdon Workman, 1911-1979) was the nationally known star of the wildly popular country music variety show, The Old Dominion Barn Dance. She was known as “Queen of the Hillbillies” through her appearances on live broadcasts coast to coast every Saturday night over WRVA radio from the Lyric Theater in Richmond, Virginia.

As the nation’s first female radio emcee, Sue helped country music legends Chet Atkins, Earl Scruggs and the Carter sisters launch their careers. From 1946 to 1957, Sue played accordion and sang with her high school sweetheart husband John “Sugarfoot” Workman, singing homespun solos and duets. Sue’s theme song was “You Are My Sunshine”.

In addition to being a loving wife and mother of two, Sue was an accomplished performer, an astute business woman, and skilled at marketing her own image as well as that of the Old Dominion Barn Dance. She recruited and polished her chosen performers.

Sue, known affectionately as “Mama Sue” to her grandchildren, was mother to a daughter (Virginia Sue ”Ginger” Workman Stanley) and a Son (William Edward ”Bill” Workman), and grandmother to Andy Stanley, Mary Sue Stanley McKenna, Ragan Workman Megginson, and the Playgarden’s owner, Sara Workman Kindt.

The Playgarden was named in honor of Sue and to promote creative play and the arts to young children.
